Glengarra Woods, on the southern slopes of the Galtees, has two looped walks to choose from – Red Loop and the Millenium (Green) Trail.

Following path of the Red Loop, the first section of this trail on the south slopes of the Galtee Mountains is sheltered under a high and dense canopy and passes outstanding mature yew trees, while the second part is through mature conifer. Many of the fine old broadleaf trees are tagged and named to help with recognition. The Red Loop very popular with children – it crosses the Burncourt River and the trees are tagged and named. Bring a picnic and make a day out of it!

The Millenium (Green) Trail 13kms west of Cahir town, the Millennium Trail provides a moderate challenge for walkers. On forest track and path, this trail includes a great variety of trees, shrubs and wildlife with a number of viewing points giving great views out across the lowlands to the Knockmealdown Mountains as it takes you along the Burncourt River and through the Millennium Forest.

You will be amazed at the fantastic variety of trees, largely owing to its historical links to the former Shanbally Estate and the stunning views. Glengarra was part of an area granted by Charles 1 to Sir Richard Everard in 1640. In the Cromwellian wars that followed Sir Richard espoused the royalist cause, which resulted in the confiscation of the property and its transfer to the Lismore family who held the lands until 1940. The remains of Shanbally castle can be found beside the road between Burncourt and Clogheen.
