Glenshelane consists of a long wooded glen that runs either side of the Glenshelane River and has an extensive network of forest roads, trails and bridges that give the walker a great variety of choice from short strolls to long distance walks. The glen was originally covered in oak which was cleared and replaced with Norwegian spruce, some small pockets of the original oak remain scattered throughout the site under which a second storey of holly, hazel and rowan now grows. Walkers can expect to enjoy beautiful riverside walks through magnificent woodlands of conifers and broadleaves.

Flore: Thick carpets of bluebell cover the forest floor in season.

Fauna: There is evidence of the red squirrel and mink. About half a mile upstream from the picnic site is a noted salmon spawning area. Many species of birds inhabit the woods.
