The magic of the railway's golden age has been brought to life in Kilmeadan, Co Waterford. Buy your tickets in a converted Irish Rail carriage, where refreshments are available. Once the train is boarded and the guard has checked passengers' tickets, wait for the whistle to blow and the guard's green flag to wave, as the train's locomotive gets the journey under way.
The trip was extended in July 2010 to continue beside the N25, through a 40 metre tunnel under the dual carriageway and on to the River Suir Bridge toll plaza. It is a now a 17 kilometres round trip and the journey takes just under an hour, so passengers are advised to wrap up well when sitting in the open carriage.
This is a great fun experience for all ages. The partially open carriages are popular with families as the train travels at 16 kilometres per hour. Children love the experience as they can relate to the smaller size engine and narrow gauge track.
No car? Just hop on board the Suirway Bus in Waterford City to travel to Kilmeadan.
