The scheme is valid on all DART, Commuter and Intercity rail services within the Republic of Ireland and is open to all overseas visitors regardless of their nationality.

Each Golden Trekker gives you four days of free rail travel.

Reservations for overseas visitors can be made through a dedicated call line when overseas or by calling into a tourist office when in Ireland.

Before You Leave Home

Reservations can be made through a dedicated call line. For more detail of this option please see the international website www.discoverireland.com/goldentrekker where you will find the number for your country’s call line.  Reservations must be made at least two working days before travelling.
The information you need when making the call for each person travelling (one call can cover a group of up to 8 people) is as follows:
•    First and last name
•    Date of birth
•    Passport number or national identity card number
•    Country of residence and postal address
•    The train station from which you will collect your ticket
•    The date on which you wish your Golden Trekker to commence.

 

If You Are Already In Ireland

You must visit a Tourist Information Office, there the agents may reserve Golden Trekkers on your behalf.

To make a reservation the following information must be provided for each passenger:
•    First and last name
•    Date of birth
•    Passport number or national identity card number
•    Country of residence
•    The train station from which you will commence your journey
•    The date on which you wish your Golden Trekker to commence.
When you have provided this information, staff in the Tourist Information Office will process your application for a Golden Trekker. Applications must be made at least two working days in advance of travel.

Once your request is processed you pick up one printed Golden Trekker confirmation (also called a warrant) per Golden Trekker ticket booked from the Tourist Information Office agent.
You can apply for up to three Golden Trekkers. As each Golden Trekker is valid for four days if you intend to travel by rail for longer than four days you will need to make more than one reservation. When booking each Golden Trekker you will need to specify the information listed above.

Activating a Golden Trekker Ticket

1.    Present your Golden Trekker confirmation at the Irish Rail ticket office (a) at the train station where you stated you would collect your tickets and (b) on the commencement date stated.  Both of these conditions must be strictly adhered to.
2.    Present your Passport or National Identity Card used when booking the Golden Trekker  as proof of identification and eligibility.
3.    Upon presentation of a valid Golden Trekker confirmation and corresponding identification you will be given a Golden Trekker ticket.

Other Things Your Need to Know

•    Each Golden Trekker ticket is valid for four days.
•    The scheme applies to all overseas visitors aged 66 or older regardless of their nationality.
•    A limit of three Golden Trekker tickets may be issued per individual consumer before 31st December 2010.
•    To get your Golden Trekker, please present your confirmation/warrant at the Irish Rail ticket office at the train station specified on your confirmation/warrant and on the commencement date for that warrant, along with the Passport or National Identity Card used when requesting the Golden Trekker. Irish Rail cannot accept confirmation documents at a different location or for a commencement date other than that stated on the Golden Trekker confirmation.
•    Golden Trekker reservations/warrants must be applied for at least two working days before the time of first use and Golden Trekker reservations cannot be issued on the day of travel.
•    The scheme is valid on all DART, Commuter and Intercity rail services within the Republic of Ireland. It does not apply to the LUAS tram service. 
•    The Golden Trekker is only valid when travelling with Irish Rail. Please be aware that if you are continuing your travel by rail to Northern Ireland, your Golden Trekker is only valid for the portion of your journey in the Republic of Ireland, which ends at Dundalk.
•    Passengers availing of the Golden Trekker must have the Passport/National Identity card used when reserving the ticket on their person when travelling.
•    Only groups of 8 or less can be facilitated on each booking transaction. Each member of the group must be aged 66 or over and each needs an individual warrant.
•    This offer is valid for travel up until 31st December 2010.
