Island Ambassadors - Edel Murphy

West Cork’s Bere Island offers a little piece of heaven according to Edel Murphy, co-owner of Bere Island Lodge. Here she fills us in on why her island home is such a winner.

"I enjoy the peace, the quaintness, the safety, and I suppose the rural part of Bere Island. It’s so lovely for children to grow up and it’s like heaven really.

I haven’t always lived on the island, but my husband has. I’m from the mainland, which is not too far away, but it’s still not an island.

It’s just so lovely and peaceful and we have everything here. We have two pubs and two restaurants, and there’s a church. We have two ferry services that are quite frequent. You wouldn’t need to go to the mainland very often though.

There are loads of walking routes here. We’re involved with the Beara Way walk. There’s a beautiful fort, the Martello Towers and a lighthouse walk. And it’s good for cycling and fishing as well.

We opened the lodge in 2002. The majority would say it’s home away from home, which is nice.

Visitors like the peace, the quaintness, the friendliness of people on Bere Island. People wave to you, which they’re amazed at. And it’s the natural beauty – just to go for a walk in the fresh air and the silence. It’s a beautiful place. I can’t put it into words, but people love it when they come. Just to get away from it all, that’s what people love."
