Ecotourism

‘I will arise and go now...’

If you think Yeats’s poem describes a typical ecotourism break, think again. The idea of immersing yourself in an unspoiled environment (and leaving it intact) has really caught on in recent years, but you don’t have to stay in a ‘small cabin’ unless that happens to be what you want. Ecotourism is about experiencing a holiday that is based in nature, ties in with the local community and is sustainable both environmentally and culturally. It gives you a chance to experience an authentic Ireland, rooted in the nature, food and lifestyles of the region.

The Burren Ecotourism Network is  a group of operators offering authentic ecotourism breaks in the unique, protected landscape of the Burren in Co. Clare. Here you can explore what makes the area worthy of protection with local farmers and walking guides, learn to work with the environment, enjoy  the stories and music that those who live in the area have to share, and the excellent organic food produced locally.

Ecotourism is defined as ‘responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the wellbeing of local people’, and all those ecotourism experiences that are listed here have been through rigorous training and regular assessment to ensure that they are certified to international ecotourism standards.
