Histórica, Republican Aesthetics attempts to repackage the nation state in the context of 2016. By considering the state’s responsibilities toward art, and why it is needed, this exhibition makes you think extensively about modern society, your fundamental rights and freedoms, and the roles of language, religion, race, and culture in this global marketplace.
Curated by Sumesh Sharma, co-founder of the Clark House Initiative in Bombay, Historica plays off on his work on alternate histories, inspired by the Black Arts movement, socio-economics and more.
This exhibition collates work by international artists; it criss-crosses the globe, throwing up new questions as you traverse the vaulted galleries of the Irish Museum of Modern Art.
If you like your art socially and politically sharp, you really shouldn’t miss this smart and interesting exhibition.
