25 - 28 October 2013
Sneem Walking Festival will take place on the October Bank Holiday weekend. The weekend will kick off at 9pm in the Sneem Hotel on Friday night with a lecture on Ireland's Ancient Wildlife by Dr. Allan Mee. Dr. Mee has steered the White Tailed Eagle Project in the Killarney National Park for the last six years.
On Saturday, there will be a choice of two walks. Walk A will go from Farraniaragh (468M) onto Cahernageeha (499M) overlooking Waterville and Lough Currane track down to Caherdaniel Village. Walk B is a historical walk along the Kerry Way to Caherdaniel. It includes a visit to Cait na Pluaise's Cave where Cait took care of her children after her eviction from the land; and continues on to the former copper mine at Coad; followed by visit to holy wells at the old cemetery; and returns to Castlecove village where transports awaits.
Again on Sunday there will be a chpice of two walks. Walk A brings you up Mullaghattin Mountain up to 773m (the highest point); and down again on the less steep side to 351m where track connects with road. Transport will be provided here for the return journey to Sneem village. Walk B departs from Sneem Village on Kerry Way down to the N70 and passing the bat sanctuary and artist's studio on route. It will then follow the winding pathway by Parknasilla Retreat through the rhododendron vegetation on to the public road to Rossdohan Island - which contains ruins of a former splendid house and arboretum.
