The Atlantic Drive is a short, but very spectacular road around the Rosguill Peninsula, which encapsulates the dramatic marriage of two natural elements - the ageless land of Donegal and the timeless courtship of the Atlantic, which has forged a glorious alliance of great beauty.

As it is only about 12km, you will best appreciate it if you walk or cycle. The walk can be comfortably accomplished in half a day. The views are spectacular, first across Sheephaven Bay to Horn Head, then into Tranarosan Bay, with its beautiful beach forming a golden link between two headlands. Further on is Melmore Head, which commands views across to Fanad Head. Then the road winds above Mulroy Bay with its many inlets, islands and peninsulas. An Meall Mór ( Melmore Head ), 3km, is signposted left, where the sands shine, the ocean sparkles and the views continue to enrapture and enchant. There is a pitch and putt facility off this road and a youth hostel is housed in Tranarosann House.

Meevagh church graveyard is signposted left where there is an old Latin cross and an old Latin cross and an ogham stone next to the ruined church. As you return to the road there is an attractive traditional pub on your right.

As you finish the Atlantic Drive you will be looking across to Rosapenna golf links, the hotel ( which is the 19th green ) and Sheephaven Bay beyond. The fine crescent beach in Downings has won a National Blue Flag and attracts many visitors. Downings is a major watersports centre and is also an important base for the tweed industry.
