Ten Things to Do... in Galway

With its mash up of traditional life and a vibrant contemporary arts scene, Galway city has endless treats in store for you.

We’ve picked 10 to whet your appetite and get you started. If you think we’ve skipped a must-see or must-do – some gem that you’d hate another visitor to miss out on – let us know on Facebook.

1. Meander through Galway’s Latin Quarter. Bursting with buskers and locally owned boutiques, cafés and restaurants, this area boasts some of Galway’s most loved pubs – perfect for a pint and a music session.

2. There’s no better way to absorb Galway’s ancient atmosphere than a trip to St Nicholas’s medieval parish church. The church fell on hard times under Cromwell when it was used as a stable. Now restored to glory, you can catch music concerts here.

3. On a walking tour of Medieval Galway City, stroll down narrow winding lanes and ancient city streets, passing the old town wall and intact medieval houses. You’ll also discover how Galway became one of the most powerful city-states in medieval Europe.

4. Galway City Museum allows visitors to learn why Galway is known as the City of Tribes, as well as browse a unique set of artefacts like currachs, War of Independence memorabilia and items from John F Kennedy’s 1963 visit to the city.

5. Don’t miss Galway City Farmers’ Market which has taken place in Church Lane by St Nicholas's Church for centuries. Pick up everything from fresh produce to locally made crafts, as well as treats as diverse as sushi and handmade chocolates.

6. Galway Cathedral is the most recently built of Europe's great stone cathedrals. It’s well worth a visit to see its rose windows, mosaics and impressive 44.2m dome. In summer musical recitals take place in its sublime surroundings.

7. For a more mellow experience of Galway City, why not head out to the Salthill prom to stretch your legs and suck in the fresh Atlantic air. If you’re brave enough, take a plunge from the Blackrock diving tower like a true local!

8. While you’re in Salthill visit Atlantaquaria, Ireland's largest aquarium. Learn about our diverse marine ecosystem as you watch rays, dogfish and small sharks. You’ll even get to see the skeleton of a huge fin whale.

9. A river cruise on the Corrib Princess will bring you to tranquil Lough Corrib. This is a chance to kick back and enjoy stunning scenery and wildlife while absorbing fascinating facts about castles and historic buildings.

10. If you fancy some quality peace and quiet, Connemara is a stone’s throw away. Choose from golf on spectacular links courses, fishing on remote twinkling lakes, walking the craggy mountains or simply soaking up the wild untamed scenery.
