About the Horse Show
Perfectly groomed and trained horses battle it out over show jumps in one arena while sturdy little ponies with even smaller riders charge up and down in relay races in another.
Meanwhile, the contest to find the best dressed female on two legs threatens to steal the limelight from the four-legged competition.
Welcome to the Dublin Horse Show – a Dublin, equestrian and social institution.
It’s hard to believe that this ‘don’t miss’ Dublin event, which takes place annually over the early days of August, started out as a humble farm fair back in 1868. These days it’s an international celebration of Ireland’s unerring relationship with the horse and a red hot social occasion.
Every year tens of thousands of people from Ireland and all over the world flock to the RDS in Ballsbridge to watch the various competitions.
Aga Khan and Puissance
Amongst the most famous events are the Aga Khan Trophy and the Puissance.
Also known as the Nation’s Cup, The Aga Khan Trophy dates back to 1926 when the show opened its doors to its first international competitors. Now eight of the top show jumping nations in the world battle it out to win the coveted trophy.
As for the Puissance, this is essentially high jump for horses. Every round, a huge mock brick fence is raised as spectators hold their breath and bite their nails. Horse and rider have been known to clear more than seven feet.
But it’s not just the riding that will keep you entertained. This is a great day out for the whole family and gangs of friends with strawberries and cream, champagne, shopping and laughter on tap.
From shopping to show jumping and fashion to fillies, the annual Dublin Horse Show is an unbridled bit of fun for everyone.
