Anglers Welcome

Anglers Welcome

Ballina

For those avid game anglers who seek great fishing and also to be within easy reach of a lively town, Ballina in Co Mayo is the ideal base.

During the 2010 season, the Moy system produced well over 12,000 rod-caught salmon. And the five year average for 2006-2010 stands at 9,105 salmon. No wonder the town has been officially designated the Salmon Capital of Ireland.

The Moy estuary also provides great sport for those with sea trout in their sights.

Of course, it’s not just the salmon that attract the attention of the adventurous angler. The Mayo region boasts such an array of fine fisheries, the angler is spoilt for choice! Lough Conn and Lough Cullin, located just to the south west of Ballina town, provide great wild brown trout fishing, with the mayfly, olive and sedge hatches all attracting fine fish to the surface, not to mention the chance of a fine Moy salmon migrating through the loughs.

Other renowned north Mayo fisheries, such as Carrowmore Lake and the Owenmore and Owenduff rivers, attract anglers from both home and abroad – and for good reason. Visitors will enjoy an unforgettable angling experience in a stunning unspoilt setting.

And then there’s the rugged Mayo coast which also provides great sport. Whether it’s from beaches, rocks or chartered angling boats, sea anglers will be tempted by a vast array of species.

And when baits and rods are put away, Ballina offers plenty more to keep you entertained. This town boasts lively pubs and a great variety of restaurants and places to stay.
