Walkers Welcome

The Burren, Co Clare

An upside-down world of contradictions, this is a landscape where rivers run underground through a honeycomb of caves carved by nature through soft limestone, where year-round pastures flourish at rocky heights and where Arctic, Alpine and Mediterranean plants grow side by side as strange flowerbed fellows in secret stone pockets and rocky wrinkles.

With its unique unspoiled botanical environment and a wealth of historical artefacts dotted throughout, the Burren is a haven for walkers. Choose from a plethora of lovely looped walks or why not tackle all or part of the 123km linear Burren Way trail. And for those seeking company on their hiking adventures, the Burren Peaks walking festival usually takes place at the end of September.

When it comes to places to base yourself for these walking adventures, you’ll have lots of choice. The Burren is surrounded by many beautiful towns and villages like Carron, Kilfenora, Ballyvaughan, Corofin, Lisdoonvarna and Doolin, which offer everything a walker could wish for.
