Walkers Welcome

The Slieve Blooms, Co Laois & Offaly

Exploring the Slieve Bloom Way on foot is a great way to immerse yourself in this lovely landscape. Starting and ending in Glenbarrow, this 77km circular trail takes in the best of these hills which rise unexpectedly from the expansive midland plains of Laois and Offaly. Much of the higher reaches of the mountains are designated environmentally protected areas so you’re in for a real treat.

With blanket bog unique to Ireland, a wonderful woodland stretch at Glenafelly, quiet country roads and the source of the Barrow River all to be explored, there is something to appeal to everyone. And for those who reach Arderin, the highest point in these hills, the reward is often a spellbinding panoramic view.

If you’re not that confident about heading into the hills on your own, graded guided walks take place every Sunday from May to November. The Slieve Bloom Eco Walking Festival which takes place every September, is another treat for those who love to ramble and meet like-minded folk.

As for accommodation, eateries and pubs which cater to walkers, you’ll have plenty to choose from.
