Kissane Sheep Farm is a traditional, working sheep farm with approximately 1000 mountain sheep and hundreds of lambs. The farm is run by John and Anne Kissane, as it has been run by the family for the last 150 years. In May 2005, the farm was first opened for visitors to enjoy and to learn about sheep farming in Ireland. Many groups and individuals have since visited the farm enjoying its activities.
Visitors can experience the hard work on the farm by watching sheepdog demonstrations, where sheepdogs gather the sheep in the mountainous terrain of the farm and herd them into a sheep yard, or by learning about sheep shearing at a demonstration during the shearing season. Why not join in and try shearing yourself while John holds the sheep for you, or help bottle feed and cuddle the pet lambs.
Nearby there are marked mountain walks with beautiful views of the MacGillycuddy's Reeks and the Black Valley and as well as a Puzzle Walk and a Treasure Trail.
You can get involved and adopt a sheep and help preserve this Irish heritage of sheep in the mountains.
