The village has been presented with some fine sculptures, including a statue of the local hero Steve ‘Crusher’ Casey, a world champion wrestler. Former French President Charles de Gaulle visited Sneem on several occasions. William Melville, the first head of the British Secret Service, was born at nearby Direenaclaurig Cross.
The innovative and new Kerry Geo-Park includes Sneem which explores local geology, a sensory garden, a riverside wildlife trail and a rare coral beach. Located 4.8km from Sneem is the renowned ‘Staigue Fort’ which is one of the largest and finest ring forts in Ireland.
The Golf courses in the locality are among the best in the world. Within an hour’s drive you will find several top class facilities. Among these are the Ring of Kerry Course, Parknasilla Golf Course, Waterville Golf Course, Kenmare Golf Club and a number of Killarney golf clubs.
There are a variety of safe beaches in the area and the rugged mountain surroundings attract adventure sports enthusiasts. Sneem is on ‘The Kerry Way’ walking route which is 215km, it is currently Ireland’s longest signposted walking trail. The Fermoyle walking loop from Sneem is 14km and estimated time 4.5 hours. The colourful town of Sneem is steeped in history and is best appreciated by exploring the surrounding hills as mapped out in the Fermoyle loop walk.
There is an approved Riding Stables in the vicinity providing pleasure trips throughout the scenic countryside. Cycling is popular in the area as is Angling. Lough Fadda is situated 4.8km from Sneem which holds a good stock of rainbow trout. Water sports such as Sea Kayaking, Windsurfing, Sailing, Diving and Canoeing are all available nearby.
Sneem market is held on Tuesdays and the village is home to various artists and offers some craftshops and galleries for you to enjoy. It also has a wide variety of small restaurants, pubs and coffee shops. The Sneem JFK 50 mile Challenge takes place in May. The Challenge is to complete the 50miles (80km) in less than 20 hours. The walk will start and end in Sneem village. The Sneem Triathlon 2012 is held in June consisting of a 750m Swim, 20.5km Cycle and a 5.5km Run and the Sneem Family Festival is held in July.
