Ben Bulben Loop
Sligo Town, Co. Sligo
Free to visit
Get up close to one of our most iconic mountains on the Benbulben Loop. This easy walk along primarily forest road will take a mere 90 minutes to complete, but walkers are in for a real treat with more than a few surprises along the route.

The Benbulben Loop is a pleasant, mostly easy walk that’s perfect for taking an afternoon out to stretch the legs with family or friends.

Head out from the car park at the entrance to Gortarowey Forest and enjoy the easygoing company of fellow hikers, runners and nature groups as you take in the fresh country air, lush forested hills, and beautiful views of picturesque Benbulben.

This signposted trail is easy to follow, bringing you along past beauty spots where you can take in the gently rolling hills, Donegal and Sligo bays, Inishmurray Island, and, in the distance, the Ox and Knocknarea Mountains.

Follow the atmospheric sound of the nearby waterfall as you head toward the trail summit. The track can become moderately challenging here in muddy conditions, so do ensure proper footwear and take care as you begin your ascent along the northern face of the mountain.

Why we like it
  • On a clear day, stunning Sliabh Liag (Slieve League) – Europe’s highest sea cliffs – can sometimes be spotted from the trail summit.
  • The nearby Streedagh beach near Grange is a Special Area of Conservation and the site of several Spanish Armada shipwrecks.
  • Sligo Town, a breezy 15-minute drive to the south, is a hub of activity, with pubs, shops, and restaurants to enjoy after your walk.
