The Tipperary 10

The Tipperary 10 are a series of ten walks in South Tipperary. 

Along river paths, mountain ranges and forest tracks you will discover bogs, butterflies and castles, and even walk in the footsteps of Ireland’s historic figures of St. Patrick and King Henry II.

Linear Walks

Discover some of Tipperary’s iconic attractions along the three linear walks.

Ireland’s only Tudor manor, Ormond Castle, is the starting point to follow the towpath along the River Suir from Carrick-on-Suir. 

Looped Walks

Put on your walking boots, pack a picnic and discover some of Ireland’s hidden gems among the six looped walks, some in the mountain ranges of the Galtees and the Knockmealdowns.

Historic Town Walks

Fethard contains the most intact walled town in Ireland which can be explored following the historic town walk.

Walk One: Follow the Tipperary Heritage Way past ancient ruins. Different species of swans can be seen in the water as the sun glistens. Prepare to see the Rock of Cashel, one of the icons of Ireland, on your horizon.

Walk Three: From Christ the King in the Glen of Aherlow, follow the waymarked path on the Ballinacourty Loop Walk and take in the breathtaking view of the Galtee Mountains. Experience the freedom of the great outdoors.

Walk Five: Follow forest paths with fantastic views in the Knockmealdown Mountains on the historical Liam Lynch Loop. This walk takes you off the beaten track and rewards you with Tipperary’s finest green countryside.

Townpath, Carrick on Suir

Walk Seven: Following the famous East Munster Way, walk from Ormonde Castle, the famous Butler home, in Carrick-on-Suir, to Kilsheelan. Relax along the River Suir and use the local bus to bring you back to your accommodation in Carrick-on-Suir.

Walk Nine. Visit the best bog in Tipperary – the Loch Doire Bhille Loop is rich in biodiversity and a haven for butterflies. Bring a picnic and spend the day exploring the flora and fauna.

Walk Two: Explore the Butler Trail starting with Cahir Castle, and then ramble along the banks of the River Suir, to Swiss Cottage, a romantic, breathtaking folly, built for Lord Cahir as a Hunting and Fishing Lodge in 1812.

Glengarra by Anthony Caplice

Walk Four: Glengarra Woods, on the southern slopes of the Galtees, has two looped walks to choose from – the Red Loop and the Millenium (Green) Trail. You will be amazed at the fantastic variety of trees, and the stunning views.

A ramble through old woods

Walk Six: Take time out to walk the Rock Loops, a hidden gem on the outskirts of Clonmel, beyond Marlfield Village. There are three extremely pleasant 5km rambles through old woods and along the banks of the River Suir.

Fethard’s Medieval Walls by Joe Kenny

Walk Eight: Walk around Fethard medieval walls, built in 1292, and explore its Norman history and Irish culture. Especially don’t miss the Holy Trinity Church (c.1200) and The Augustinian Abbey (c1300). This is fun for all the family, with amenities nearby.

The Ice House by Mary Ryan

Walk Ten: The historical Grange Crag Loop, with its Victorian ice house and Wellington Memorial, has views across the whole of Tipperary. This path is off the beaten track but worth the walk.
