Athlone is a designated historic town and is commonly known as the 'Gateway to the West'.  Athlone Castle is a major attraction in the town and features both the Castle Visitor Centre and the Luan Art Gallery.  If walking is your thing, you can avail of two historic town walking trails; the town is the starting point for the Lough Ree touring route.  Athlone is the perfect location to access various water activities such as angling, cruising, water skiing, windsurfing, and sailing.
