Lough Derg is one of the most notable freshwater lakes in Ireland. The area surrounding the lake is of significant ecological interest, with five habitats listed on Annex I of the EU Habitats Directive. The site has been designated as a Special Protection Area (SPA) as it supports important numbers of wintering wildfowl, including Greenland white-fronted geese, common terns, and cormorants.

The beach is lifeguarded during the bathing season and more information can be found at the notice board located at the beach.

The beach has received the International Blue Flag Award for 2019.
