On first entering Kilmainham Gaol, you might get a sense of déjà vu – it has been used as a location in several films, including Michael Collins. Some people visit Kilmainham just to experience a prison interior; others go from a sense of history. Robert Emmet was held here, as was Parnell. The 1916 rebels were executed here. It’s the Irish Bastille.

What floats your boat? Distilleries? You’re spoiled for choice – Dublin has the Old Jameson Distillery, Cork has the Old Midleton Distillery, Westmeath has Locke’s Distillery. Or is it science? Head to Birr Castle to visit its historic Science Centre, or to Dublin’s Science Gallery for more cutting-edge exhibitions. For medieval history, a trip to Blarney Castle might be just the ticket, while the Foynes Flying Boat Museum reflects a more recent past.

From the Arigna Mining Experience where for 400 years until 1990 coal was mined in this picturesque Roscommon valley, to Dublin Zoo, there really is something for everyone in Ireland’s visitor attractions.
