digital_self

01 December - Sunday 25 February 2018
Venue: Irish Museum of Modern Art

IMMA is hosting a new group exhibition, digital_self, at its Project Spaces on their Kilmainham campus. The exhibition is built around the theme of how omnipresent digital technologies and our connection to the internet mediate, and impact upon, our lives and our ideas of self.

The idea explored within, of a digital self, is something that has developed as these technologies have become an increasingly big part of our lives, in the form of cellular phones, wearables, and the personal computer.

The artists exhibiting at digital_self include both Irish and international artists who examine the ideas of self from a variety of perspectives. For example, American artist Molly Soda is a webcam performer whose representation on social media networks has become the centre of her art practice. Meanwhile, Irish artist Eilis McDonald creates online works of art, as well as offline versions of her Tumblr posts. Other featured artists include Amalia Ulman, Theresa Nanigian, Jayson Musson, Jonathan Mayhew, Julie Martin and Billy Klüver of EAT, and Johann Arens.

Accompanying the exhibition are a series of talks hosted by the museum that will illuminate many of the ideas that are central to digital_self, and provide a fascinating counterpoint to the more traditional portraiture exhibitions (such as the Lucien Freud exhibition) that are concurrently on display at IMMA.
