Hanami Welcoming the Cherry Blossom Fairies

31 March - Sunday 1 April 2018
Venue: Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens

This year the Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens will celebrate the Cherry Blossom Festival at Easter and welcome the Cherry Blossom Fairies to the Gardens, with music, fairy trails and fairy light workshops.

Patrick Lafcadio Hearn was a 19th century writer with Greek and Irish heritage who spent years in the United States and, most notably, in Japan. He collected and translated Japanese folk stories, fairy tales, poems and lyrics, and also wrote on his time spent learning about the culture of the Far East and Buddhism in books like Gleaning In Buddha-Fields and In Ghostly Japan.

Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens are based in Tramore, County Waterford, which was Hearn’s familial home when he moved from Greece to Ireland. The gardens are styled after Hearn’s own biography, so central to them are the Japanese Gardens, however there is also an American Garden representing the time he spent in Louisiana, a Greek Garden representing his heritage, and a Victorian garden representing his youth in Tramore.

Hanami is an event celebrating the arrival of the cherry blossom fairies to the gardens across the Easter weekend. There will be a party in the woodland area, music, a fairy trail, fairy light workshops that will be suitable for all the family.
