The Big Grill

15 - Sunday 18 August 2019
Venue: Herbert Park

Named ‘Festival of the Year 2018’ by John & Sally McKenna in their guide, Ireland The Best and now in its sixth year, they have a scorching lineup of international names and hot homegrown talent serving up specially created live fire dishes and of course plenty of craft drinks. This summer they’re fired up to welcome Canadian chef, restaurateur, cookbook author, internet sensation and VICE favourite Matty Matheson to Dublin for his first ever Irish festival. He’ll join forces with his good pal, Lee Tiernan from the brilliant Black Axe Mangal in London for a very special live fire feast with details and tickets announced very soon.

James Beard nominee Billy Durney will once again bring his award-winning Brooklyn Hometown BBQ to Dublin. And the Big Grill Festival are thrilled to add a few more legendary USA barbecue experts to the lineup - Mike Johnson from Sugarfire Smokehouse, St.Louis, USA and Jiyeon Lee & Cody Taylor from Heirloom Market BBQ, Atlanta, Georgia.

From Ireland they have Grainne O’Keefe back, bringing her expertise of cooking on charcoal every day in Clanbrassil House and her burger knowledge from Bujo to the festival. Holly Dalton from Gertrude and Gaz Smith from Michael’s, Lucky Tortoise Dim Sim, Bowls by Kwanghi Chan and Caribbean pop-up Lil’ Portie. And a few more returning Irish based scorchers include Paul Flynn from The Tannery in Waterford and Fingal Ferguson of Gubbeen Smokehouse.

Pioneer of London’s high-end barbecue scene, Neil Rankin from Temper Restaurants, returns to the festival with his exceptional nose-to-tail cooking. He’ll be joined by his Soho head chef and asador expert Martin Anderson and Goatober’s & Cabrito’s James Wheltor. BBQ expert and author Genevieve Taylor joins for the first time along with some of favourite returning pitmasters Andy Stubbs from Low’n’Slow Birmingham, Smokestak’s David Carter, John Relihan, Rama Basilio, Jack May and Mark O’Brien. Hunter Gather Cook led by Nick Weston returns with a weekend of wild food, butchery, fire craft and woodland themed demos.

While the barbecue takes centre stage, the devotion doesn’t stop with the food. Food writer Dee Laffan hosts Bastecamp the smoking hub of the festival bringing barbecue experts and novices together for in-depth butchery, barbecue and smoking workshops. Nick Solares food writer and host of Meat Life returns to feast his way around the festival and host heated chats and interviews with the pitmasters. The wildly popular, crowd pleaser Frank’s Hot Sauce Wing and Chilli Challenges are back, bigger and better than ever. Watch brave souls who think they can take the heat live on stage. The Just Eat Waiters will be back roaming the festival and queuing for food so you don’t have to, Schweppes 1783 are the official mixer partner and will host a special cocktail bar all weekend and they’ll have an exciting bar installation with fun and games from the Jameson team.
