The World Premiere of Seamus Heaney's Sweeney

Saturday Saturday 17 March 2018
Venue: The National Concert Hall

Sweeney Astray is Irish poet and Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney’s version of the medieval work Buile Suibhne. Simply put, the poem presents Sweeney to us, a man with an unbalanced mind, but it is the themes of pain and praise, tragedy and humour among others, that make this poem particularly evocative and inspiring.

One of Ireland’s most innovative musicians Neil Martin took inspiration from Sweeney Astray and composed a series of songs based on the poem. Seamus Heaney's Sweeney will be performed for the first time ever at Ireland’s National Concert Hall and features renowned singer Iarla Ó Lionáird with actor Stephen Rea as Narrator.

David Brophy conducts this stunning performance on St Patrick’s Night, a night in celebration of Irish art, Irish music, and one of Ireland’s most important literary voices, Seamus Heaney.
