A family business for more than 20 years, the Old Deanery Cottages, in Killala, Co Mayo, offers eight award-winning self-catering cottages with their own view over the Atlantic.
Originally run by Mrs Betty Keane, Betty’s daughter, Liz and her partner Tony, now continue the tradition offering a warm welcome and cosy and comfortable accommodation.
Each of these cottages is fully furnished and offers all modern facilities, while retaining the cosiness of a traditional Irish home. With two bedrooms downstairs (one double and one twin/single) and a dormer bedroom (for three to four people) upstairs, each cottage can comfortably accommodate six or seven people. The larger cottages have an en suite upstairs.
Each cottage features a large living/dining area with a warming turf fire waiting for you on your arrival. There is also free turf available for the duration of your stay.
Each cottage has wireless internet access and a television/DVD player with satellite TV.
The kitchen is fully equipped with a washing machine and dryer; iron and ironing board; a fridge-freezer; hob, oven and microwave. The dining area has ample room for six to eight people, with panoramic views over Bartragh Island. A barbecue is available for sunny days.
The organic kitchen garden is there for you to choose vegetables, salads and herbs in season. Cots, high chairs and a steriliser can be booked in advance. Baby-sitting and an ironing service are both available on request and with advance warning.
The cottages are heated with a combination of turf fire and oil-fired central heating.
Pets are welcome, though we ask that you keep them out of the bedrooms.
Guests can order welcome boxes for their arrival with homemade brown bread, local honey, milk, orange juice, Fairtrade tea, Fairtrade coffee and mineral water. In the luxury version there is also a bottle of wine, smoked salmon, Carrowholly cheese and oat biscuits.
The ancient fishing village of Killala, home to the 1798 uprising, is a treasure trove for lovers of history, as well as fans of the perfectly pulled pint and traditional music session. Surrounded by towering cliffs and sandy beaches, the cottages are the perfect base for walkers, surfers, golfers and fishing enthusiasts. Or you can simply relax in your cottage by the open turf fire and watch the sun go down over the wild Atlantic.
The Joe Keane Creative Centre – the Deanery’s converted Victorian stables – provides a rainy-day space for children, with games, books and internet access. The centre runs art and creative writing courses, and is available to groups who wish to arrange their own workshops.
The Old Deanery Holiday Cottages run special weeklong and midweek breaks all through the summer, and offers discount vouchers for local angling, walking and foraging trips, as well as surfing and golf packages.
