Caherconnell International Furnace Festival
Carran, Co. Clare
27 August - 28 August 2022
Iron smelters will make their own iron from Irish iron ore and blacksmiths will forge it into replicas of medieval objects excavated at Caherconnell Fort. A unique combination of spectacle and learning for the whole family.

Since its discovery, iron has thoroughly changed our world. Its ores are rather common and it can be made harder and sharper than other metals. With iron tools, wood and stone can be turned into castles and cathedrals, with iron ploughs more wheat can be grown and the army with the best steel weapons likely wins the war.

At the Caherconnell International Furnace Festival, you can see iron being smelted form Irish ion ore and forged into arrowheads, knives and buckles. On the free guided tours you can learn about the history of iron in Ireland and the connection with Caherconnell Fort.

Seeing the birth of iron is a unique experience for young and old.

Readers are advised to check with the venue before relying on the details published here.
