Walking Natural landscape
Explore the delights of the Royal Canal Greenway on a 2.7km walk from Ashtown to Castleknock. This easy Dublin leg of the scenic greenway showcases canal bank scenery and fresh perspectives on the capital’s natural beauty.

Following the banks of the pictorial Royal Canal, this linear trail takes just 40 minutes to complete.

Connecting the pleasant suburban areas of Ashtown and Castleknock, the tarmacadam terrain is flat throughout making the Royal Canal Greenway a charm to walk.

The Royal Canal Greenway is a shared walking and cycling route the unfolds from Dublin City centre to the canal’s startpoint in County Longford. Please note that sections of the greenway are still being developed.

You’ll find plenty of places to stop and enjoy the scenery from in both Ashtown and Castleknock. The 12th Lock pub in Castleknock, by the Royal Canal’s actual 12th lock, is a particularly apt spot to watch the barges bob past and hear the lock’s waters gush.
