War of Friends, The Civil War Story of Pádraic Ó Máille & Liam Mellows
Galway City, Co. Galway
18 October 2022 - 31 May 2023
The exhibition tells the story of Pádraic Ó Máille and Liam Mellows, former military and political comrades, who ended up on opposing sides during the Irish Civil War. It features several objects connected to both men, including Mellows' last letter.

In December 1922, during the Irish Civil War, Liam Mellows and three other Republican leaders were executed in reprisal for an attack on politicians Pádraic Ó Máille from Connemara and Seán Hales from Cork. Former military and political comrades, Ó Máille had served under Mellows during the Easter Rising in Galway, and both men represented Galway in the first and second Dáil Éireann.

The exhibition gives a brief overview of the civil war, explores the lives of Ó Máille and Mellows, before focussing on the tragic events of December 1922.

Funded by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, 'War of Friends, 1922-23' is produced as part of Galway City Council’s Decade of Centenaries Programme 2022.
