Completely off-road, this lush Limerick greenway takes walkers and cyclists along the redeveloped line of the area’s old railway, complete with cut-stone bridges and railway station remnants.
An easy off-road route over farmland and woodland, the Great Southern Greenway Limerick treats walkers to stunning scenery as it connects the market towns of Rathkeale, Newcastlewest and Abbeyfeale.
This linear trail also passes through the pretty villages of Ardagh, Barnagh and Templeglantine and takes four hours to complete.
A truly idyllic route, you’ll find plenty of heritage gems too. From Norman castles, ancient abbeys and Medieval ruins; to workhouses, famine graveyards, deserted railway stations and marvellous 19th-century engineering, walkers won’t fail to be enamoured by this trail’s charms.
Passing many welcoming towns and villages between Rathkeale, Newcastlewest and Abbeyfeale, you’ll have no trouble finding somewhere for that well-earned cup of tea.
- In Rathkeale you’ll spot St Mary’s Priory – an Augustinian abbey with 13th-century origins.
- Tullig Wood and the rivers Allaghaun, Deel and Daar are just some of the natural beauty spots you’ll enjoy.
