The stretch along the River Shannon between Lanesborough and Rooskey is an ideal base for the pike angler, while Lanesborough offers excellent facilities for the coarse angler. There are six venues from which to choose: the renowned Hot Water Stretch, the New Cut and Kilnacarrow, and two lakes near Longford town, Clooncose and Lough Sallagh.
The River Shannon upstream from Lanesborough holds very good stocks of pike. The famous Lanesborough warm water stretch is a very popular location, while further upstream, mildly grown inlets along with vast wide stretches which run for miles can be found.
Some hotbeds include where the Feorish and Camlin rivers enter the river Shannon downstream from Tarmonbarry. The best location, however, is on the stretch where the Shannon opens into Lough Forbes, which is a substantial lake in its own right, 3km-long and at the northern section boasting its widest point at over 1.5km, where the River Rinn enters the lake.
