The composer Kaija Saariaho (b. 1952) is one of the most wide-ranging and important composers known today. Her music combines fascinating and complex orchestral timbres with innovative electronics to create whole new sound worlds that are both immediate and extra ordinary.
From her first studies in her native Finland through her work in ‘Spectral Music’ at the Influential IRCAM Institute in the Centre Pompidou, Paris, her work opens new possibilities for the way in which acoustic and electronic music can combine to create until now unimagined sounds.
