Turning Heads: Rubens, Rembrandt and Vermeer
Dublin City, Co. Dublin
24 February - 26 May 2024
Family friendly
This exhibition explores the human face, and some of art history's most revered masters' obsession with it. Witness how artists including Rubens, Rembrandt and Vermeer toyed with emotion and expression through head studies called 'tronies.'

A collaboration between the National Gallery of Ireland and the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Antwerp, 'Turning Heads' will bring you up close and personal with art history in a very unique way. Focusing on the 'tronie', this exhibition will present you with an opportunity to witness these exquisitely intimate drawings, paintings & engravings of people whose identity was a mere afterthought - the focus being the subtleties and intricacies of their expression.

This artistic phenomenon has its origins in the sixteenth century and was eventually practiced by artists including Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt van Rijn, Johannes Vermeer, Anthony van Dyck and Michael Sweerts, among others, all of whom are represented in the exhibition.
