Atlantic Irish Seaweed

Based at Derrynane, Caherdaniel on the Ring of Kerry, John and Kerryann Fitzgerald have been running Seaweed Discovery Workshops, Tastings and Tours since 2009.

With backgrounds in science and photography respectively, their combined love of nature and the sea led them to research the Seaweed bounty thriving on nearby pristine shores.

Kerryanns catering background and culinary acumen helped her create a multitude of delicious seaweed dishes that have been relished by locals and visitors alike.

Workshops/Tastings are customised for individuals as well as small and larger groups that take place all along the spectacular Kerry coastline. All are enjoyed by novices and "seaweeders" alike.

Workshops/Tastings /Tours offers include; 1 hour Tasty Introduction, 3 hour Talk, Taste , Tour and 5 hour Full Workshop.

Join The 1 hour "Seaweed - a Tasty Introduction", where you can discover the nutritional, horticultural and cosmetic benifits of these ocean plants, as you view and taste samples harvested from nearby shores. Find out why people as diverse as the Ancient Monks, Vikings and Daniel O Connell all included Seaweeds in their diets.

On The 3 Hour "Walk, Talk & Taste " tour, your adventure will begin with a slideshow presentation of the more common Sea vegetables available along our coastline. Next you embark on a Lowtide guided walk along one of the most scenic routes in the country. On return to base, you will taste an assortment of delicious seaweed based dishes and learn about its horticultural, nutritional and cosmetic benifits. The history of seaweed use will be mapped out, from glass making to medicine with a written history going back 1,500 years.

The Full Workshop is 5 hours long and begins with a slideshow introduction to the 3 main Seaweed groups. Next you venture to the sea for the foreshore walk where you will learn to forage, find and sustainably hand harvest your own Seaweeds. Back at base you will be treated to a 10 course tasting lunch all made from different seaveg and a complimentary glass of Seaweed champagne. You will learn about their nutritional properties and what gives it its "Superfood" status. A demonstration follows showing how to dry store and cook with Seaweeds. You will also learn how to make some natural skin and hair products and enjoy your first Seaweed Smoothie.

Unique "pop-up" Seaweed Catering is offered for private parties, openings etc.

Within a few kilometers visitors are spoiled for choice with unique attractions like UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ancient monastic outpost of Skellig Michael Island. Nearby Staigue Fort is a well preserved example of a late stone age ring fort.
