St. Mel's Cathedral

Longford Town
Republic of Ireland

St. Mel’s Cathedral was founded in 1840. On Christmas Day 2009 it suffered from a catastrophic accidental fire. A five year restoration campaign was set in motion which saw the Cathedral reopening for Christmas 2014. The Cathedral has been tastefully restored to its original beauty while being remodeled as a living church for a new century. Some of the highlights include the wonderful limestone columns, intricate plaster work, pipe organ and liturgical art from a number of contemporary Irish and international artists.
