The Bailieborough Bridewell visitor centre, adjoining the recently renovated historic courthouse, now a thriving community hub in Bailieborough, County Cavan, provides a compelling insight into the history of bridewells in 19th century Ireland.

In Ireland, bridewells were established in many towns during the 17th and 18th centuries to house petty criminals, vagrants and those awaiting trial. Bailieborough's courthouse was erected in 1817, with the addition of the bridewell gaol in 1833.

A visit to The Bailieborough Bridewell is suitable for all ages, whether you are a history enthusiast, a curious traveller or a local reconnecting with your roots.

This immersive experience brings the Bailieborough Bridewell’s story to life while also reflecting the town’s heritage shaped by the Three Folk of Gaelic, Ulster Scots and English. Self guided and guided tours are available.
