Slí Arann Mhor (Arranmore Island) - Sli Dhun na nGall
Ailt an Chorráin, Co. Donegal
Free to visit
Soak up all the coastal beauty of County Donegal on this exceptional 14km island loop. Remote and rugged, this corner of the Wild Atlantic Way boasts seascapes galore and showcases the county’s largest island.

Beginning and ending at Arranmore Island’s ferry port, the Slí Árainn Mhór - Arranmore Island Loop takes five hours to complete.

Moderate in grade, this loop follows tarred road, bog road and green track as it circles the idyllic island. Arranmore is the largest island off the Donegal coast and this 14km loop treats walkers to breathtaking views in all directions.

The trail brings you to the wild and uninhabited interior and western side of the island, as well as through the houses concentrated along the southern and eastern sides. The loop also skirts the eastern shoulder of Cranagarn and the southern slopes of Frenchman’s Hill.

Perched by the Donegal Gaeltacht, many people on Árainn Mhór are fluent Irish speakers. Looking for refreshment after your trail? There are a handful of pubs on the island itself, while a ferry ride away in the fishing village of Burtonport you’ll find yet more welcoming spots.

Why we like it
  • The views of the island and coastal scenery are simply superb on the Slí Árainn Mhór - Arranmore Island Loop.
  • Part of the loop descends to join the edges of pretty Lough Shore and passes a memorial marking the island’s connection with Beaver Island, Canada.
  • From this loop you can join a 2km spur walk to the island’s remote lighthouse at Binrawros Point.
