Childhood memories of summers spent at his grandparents’ homestead, exploring the wild Atlantic coast and an ever growing desire to breathe new life into an almost forgotten style of Irish whiskey, enticed James Doherty to bring his family back to County Donegal. The result is The Ardara Distillery.

The Ardara Distillery is the home of Sliabh Liag Distillers on the banks of the Owentocker River in the vibrant town of Ardara, in County Donegal. Here you will discover an alternative approach to Irish spirits. Their whiskey honours the methods of Ireland's illicit forefathers and is inspired by the almost lost tradition of a smoky style of spirit. This tradition has been reawakened by modern distillation know how and in the blended whiskeys. Sliabh Liag Distillers’ distinctive maritime gin, crafted amidst the untamed beauty of the wild Atlantic, embodies ‘draíocht na farraige' or, the sea’s enchantment in a heartfelt homage to the Donegal coastline.

During your tour at The Ardara Distillery, a skilled team will guide you through the history of Donegal’s immense distilling heritage and the 'All Grain In' distilling process. Your visit will be rounded off with a tutored tasting experience, where you are taken on a journey into smoky Irish whiskey with the Silkie blended whiskeys.

Booking in advance is required for distillery tours.
