Africa Day is returning to the Royal Hospital Kilmainham on Sunday 17 May 2026. Africa Day is the annual day that commemorates the foundation of the African Union and celebrates the people and culture of African countries.

Organised in partnership between the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Dublin City Council, 15,000 people attended the event in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham last year where they were entertained by over 40 musical acts, dancers and cultural groups representing countries across Africa.

This free, family day will see musicians, dancers and cultural groups from across Africa gather to celebrate Africa Day.

History and heritageRoyal Hospital Kilmainham

Built in 1680, the Royal Hospital Kilmainham is the oldest classical building in Ireland and was based on Les Invalides in Paris. Located on Military Road, Kilmainhan, Dublin 8. The building occupies the site of a former Medieval hospital and monastery. It contains a chapel, great hall, formal gardens, burial grounds and artist studios. It has also housed the IMMA since 1991, the Irish Museum of Modern Art.
