Killarney is a walker’s paradise, with 26,000 acres of ‘free to roam’ Killarney National Park surrounded by Kerry’s wonderful landscapes, wilderness and miles of nearby golden ‘blue flag’ beaches. There is a choice of accommodation, dining and entertainment options in this outdoor enthusiast’s haven.
At any time of year, with or without guides, walkers can choose from low level parkland walks around tranquil lakes and through some of Ireland’s oldest oakwoods to high level hill walks, bridle paths, or the summits of the MacGillicuddy Reeks.
Long and short linear walks including Kerry Way and the Dingle Way can be navigated in full or in part. Killarney also has ‘looped walks’ taking from 30 minutes to four plus hours.
Route maps and pocket guides are available for the recognised established routes but Killarney offer the pleasure of numerous walking options that are still very much in their undiscovered state, presenting the walker the opportunity to explore and discover at will.
For the high level mountain climbs, an experienced and insured guide is recommended.
Killarney Chamber has two guided walks operators offering a wide range of options from leisurely strolls and historic treks including lake crossing elements, moderate hill and mountain treks to strenuous and testing climbs of Ireland’s highest mountains and peaks.
