MacDonagh Junction is the largest shopping centre in the south east. The Centre has modern and spacious baby changing areas and public toilet facilities and is completely accessible for all users. The car park has spaces for 1,100 cars and costs €2 for 3 hours. Dunnes offer the first hour free when you spend €10. The main eating area is known as The Workhouse Square. This is a covered outdoor space made up from the beautifully restored former Famine Workhouse buildings with access from the main street via the Hebron Road and also from the shopping mall itself. The restaurants include Starbucks, The Courtyard Bar & Grill, Quigleys, Costa Coffee and O’Brien’s Sandwich Bar & Bagel Factory. Eddie Rockets can be found at the main entrance to the Centre.
The heritage and historical aspects of the restored workhouse buildings, the renovated railway buildings, the famine memorial garden and the Kilkenny time capsule, are unique to MacDonagh Junction, adding further to Kilkenny’s rich historical legacy. These aspects are detailed and laid out on a display in Workhouse Square beside Starbucks. For families and children there is a free play area beside HB Sweet Factory and K-Bowl is the ten pin bowling centre located at the front of the premises.
