Rothe House & Garden is a late 16th century merchant house and garden, located in the heart of Kilkenny City. With three houses, cobbled courtyards and a beautiful restored garden, it gives an authentic experience of merchant life in Ireland.

Rothe House & Garden is the only intact merchant house and garden from the late 16th century in Ireland. Built in 1594 by wealthy merchant John Rothe, this was the family home and place of business.

Tucked behind the impressive façade are three houses linked by cobbled courtyards. The houses have been restored to highlight their original features and give a sense of what this great house was once like. Beyond the houses is the beautifully restored garden. Stretching back to the original city wall, it is laid out today in the 17th century style. Vegetable beds, herb gardens, an abundant orchard and herbaceous borders delight the senses. Visitors can also browse in the beautiful gift shop or research their Kilkenny family roots.
