The landscape surrounding Windgap is dominated by steep hills and large wooded areas, (Bearna Breac and Carrig na gCapall). It lies in a former slate quarrying district spanning the Kilkenny and Tipperary border. Windgap is an area steeped in history and rich in culture.
Starting from the car park at the lake, take a moment to view the pictures of some of the wonders of Windgap displayed in the Old Schoolhouse. Then enjoy the village loop walk where the purple arrow signs will lead you to the woodland path. On your route you will see some of the finest examples of local heritage, Feehans Well, the Old League House, and Calvary Grotto (Reflective Walk). This amazing grotto which overlooks the village is the largest in Europe. It covers 4 acres, with the detail of Italian mosaic, Ogham Stones and featuring three languages.
Take a break at the Summerhouse and watch the quartz stones glistening in the sunshine, before returning to the lake via the site of the Old Forge.
