Solas Eco Garden Centre in Portarlington, County Laois, is Ireland's first eco garden centre. This eco friendly garden centre has a green ethos at its core and recycling is to be found all the way through, from its location through to the choice of materials it has used in its design and build.

Occupying a once derelict site on the Dublin Road in Portarlington, County Laois, Solas Eco Garden Centre has been created from disused shipping containers and recycled materials. They aim to promote sustainable living and champion green gardening practices as well as supporting the sale of local artisan products. An extensive range of plants and flowers are for sale, and their onsite horticulturist is always available to answer any gardening questions.

With over 2,000m2 of indoor retail space, you will be able to find everything you need for both your home and garden. After exploring the planting area, relax and enjoy the food village where tasty treats and gourmet sandwiches can be found. Workshops and training events are available each week for both adults and children, offering a range of options from craft activities to learning to grow vegetables organically. Every Saturday there is a farmers market and the purpose built Container Street food market offers an exciting range of organic, local and fresh produce.

Why we like it
  • Only recycled materials are used for shop fittings, shelving, signage, plant benches and tree planters.
  • You can visit the wildlife meadow which is planted with only locally sourced Irish wildflowers.
  • The garden centre is irrigated by its own ground well.
  • The use of recyclable packaging in the shop and compostable packaging in the food court.
Tips from locals

Take a short drive to visit the nearby wetlands of Derryounce Lakes and Walkways.
