The Costello Memorial Chapel in Carrick-On-Shannon, County Leitrim, is the second smallest chapel in the world. It was built in the 19th century by Edward Costello in memory of his wife. Husband and wife now rest there side by side.

The Costello Memorial Chapel was built as a memorial and burial vault for Costello's wife Josephine, who died two years prior to construction.

It is 5m long, 4.5m wide, and 9m high. Each side of the aisle holds a coffin lined with lead and covered with slabs of thick reinforced glass. The inscriptions on both coffins can be read with the aid of a torch. The remains of Josephine (1889) and of Edward (1891) are both interred in this beautiful memorial.

Think of it as Carrick-On-Shannon's version of the Taj Mahal.
