Welcome to the Achill Experience Aquarium & Visitor Centre at Keel on Achill Island, County Mayo’s first and only aquarium.

Fun for everyone, the Achill Experience is an aquarium visit like no other. Discover their local and tropical fish friends, including Nemo and Dory, in the 16-tank aquarium. Through their knowledgeable and passionate aquarium guides, you will meet all their exciting sea creatures including Smurfette, Sapphire, Rusty and Charlie, the rare lobsters, Buddy, the very friendly baby shark, and the newest aquarium addition, Ray-chel, the baby ray.

Discover Achill Island’s rich and fascinating history in their visitor centre through the 18 history boards, replica boley house modelled after the Deserted Village houses, the recycled basking shark and the audio visual room. Learn about the Kirkintilloch Tragedy, the history of the Great Western Greenway, the special relationship between Achill Island and the American artist Robert Henri and lots more as you explore the stories of Achill Island’s past.

Find the perfect souvenir to remind you of your time on Achill Island in their gift shop, which also serves delicious cups of Cosmic Coffee.

Booking is essential and you can book your tickets on their website.

Come, Look, Learn.

Tar, Féach, Foghlaim.

Why we like it
  • Provides a look at the extensive marine life around Achill’s coastline and beyond, with interactive touch tanks.
  • Displays many fascinating stories of Achill’s rich and sometimes tragic history.
  • Visit the replica cottage c1840, like the cottages at nearby Slievemore deserted village.
Tips from locals

Look out for first edition prints of the famous American artist Robert Henri, who painted portraits of local children in the 1920s.
