Discover the unique story of the Old Irish Goat and how a small rural community has undertaken the mammoth task of bringing part of Ireland’s pastoral history and living heritage back from the brink.

Discover Ireland’s native goat at ‘The Old Irish Goat Centre’, Mulranny.

The centre features, viewing of the charismatic Old Irish Goat, an art exhibit, a history and science exhibit, a film documentary on the Old Irish Goat conservation project and a craft shop selling local handmade crafts.

A feral herd of goats has lived on the hills above Mulranny Village for as long as the oldest members of the community can remember. In the search for Ireland’s lost native goat, a pioneering DNA study carried out by the Smurfit Genetics Institute at Trinity College, identified Mulranny goats ‘as some of the last modern representatives of the ‘Old Irish’ type of goat, and highlight them for much needed conservation efforts’.
