Many know Alcoholics Anonymous, founded in 1935, but fewer know Sr Ignatia Gavin, a Mayo-born nun who helped shape its early work.
The National Museum of Ireland, Turlough Park, hosts a free talk on her life at 3pm, Friday, 26 June 2026. Organised by the Sisters of Charity St Augustine, it coincides with a Cleveland delegation’s visit marking 175 years of service and the 60th anniversary of her death.
Born in Mayo in 1889, she later worked in Ohio, pioneering hospital-based alcoholism treatment and helping develop AA’s 12-step programme with its founders. Speakers include Sr Judith Ann Karam and Dr Theodore Parran.
