Longford is a county of hidden gems. Sure you’ve probably passed through and thought it has lovely countryside, but did you know that it offers fantastic fishing along the Shannon, the Inny and the Camlin River, and also on Loughs Ree and Gowna? These waterways are also a huge draw for water sports’ enthusiasts. The Inny is well known as one of the country’s best white water paddling rivers with rapids to test any ability. The ‘hot water’ stretch at Lanesboro is another kayaker’s favourite. Walking enthusiasts are well catered for too. Favourites include the Ballinamuck Bog Loop or the walks at Derrycasson Woods which hug Lough Gowna’s shoreline. And for those who prefer to avoid any kind of hills, the Royal Canal Way winds its lovely way through Ballymahon, Kenagh, Longford Town, Killashee, and on to Clondra. This Midlands county also boasts some fascinating heritage sites, like Aughnacliffe’s 5,000-year-old portal dolmen, the ruins of the abbey in Abbeylara and the historic remains of St Mel’s first cathedral in Ardagh. And don’t miss the incredible Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre, which uncovers the history of an Iron-Age bog road. It’s not all mellow pleasures however and if you fancy a dose of adrenalin, Longford also offers horse riding, go-karting, grey hound racing and even flying lessons! Seasonal attractions complete the picture. How about the annual air show at Abbeyshrule or the Ballinalee Connemara Pony Show, which is a great family day out?
