One of the major attractions at the Castlerea Railway Museum is locomotive A55, a Metropolitan Vickers of Manchester diesel electric dating from 1955. It was purchased from Iarnród Éireann minus its machinery and moved to the premises where it was converted into a snug. A railway museum has been built around the locomotive.

It is probably the largest and most varied repository of railway heritage memorabilia in the country, with the exception of the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum.
